When most people begin researching ways to correct dental issues that they're experiencing like crooked teeth, overcrowding in the mouth or even an over or underbite, they quickly realize that there are two key options available to them: traditional braces and a clear plastic aligner system like Invisalign.

Setting aside the fact that traditional braces are certainly a viable treatment option at any age, Invisalign has become quite popular in recent years thanks to the many benefits that would be difficult, if not impossible, to replicate through other options.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign works by breaking free of the "one size fits all" myth of dental treatment, offering a totally unique treatment plan to fit every patient. After a series of precise measurements are taken of your teeth and your mouth, your dental professional will be able to provide you with clear plastic aligners that essentially act as a "second skin" to your teeth. Not only that, but you'll also be able to see a visualization of how your mouth will look at the end of the process BEFORE treatment actually begins.

Every few weeks, you swap out one set of clear plastic aligners for another. Over time, your teeth move more and more into the "correct" positions. While everyone is different and the total treatment time will vary depending on the specific issues you're trying to correct, the average treatment time lasts between six and 18 months.

Does Invisalign Work For Everyone?

While it is true that Invisalign is a terrific treatment option for a lot of patients, there are people who may need to pursue an alternative treatment plan for a specific reason.

The best way to know is to visit our location at your convenience and have a free consultation with Dr. Shih. Given the state of your mouth and what you hope to accomplish, Dr. Shih will be able to tell you with certainty whether Invisalign is something worth exploring.

Are There Any Diet Restrictions?

This is one of the major areas that Invisalign differs from something like traditional braces, as there are NO dietary restrictions to speak of.

This is due to the fact that the aligners are removable, so you can just take them out of your mouth before you have a meal. Just be sure to properly brush and floss your teeth before you put them back in again.

Can Anything Stain My Aligners?

This is another misconception that a lot of people have— the aligners are very strong, but they are not indestructible.

To put it another way: yes, it is possible to stain your aligners in certain situations. For example, colored beverages have the potential to do this. This includes, but is not limited to, things like wine, coffee or tea. Smoking can also stain your aligners.

How Much Does Invisalign Cost?

The answer to this question will obviously vary based on a number of things, like the length of the treatment plan in question. However, most people find that Invisalign comes out to be just about the same price as traditional braces.
